To control how your property and assets are distributed, your estate is administered, and your minor children cared for, you need a will. If you do not have a valid will, your provincial government can make these decisions for you. Your first step to writing a will is to take inventory of your estate. This kit contains a simple estate inventory/planner. You also need a health care directive (sometimes called a “medical directive” or “living will”) if you want to control vital health care decisions should you become incapacitated. Tens of thousands of Canadians have relied on Self-Counsel’s books, forms and kits to help them save money and write their own legal wills. The Complete Canadian Wills Kit includes the following forms:

  • Estate Planner/Inventory
  • Last Will & Testament
  • Health Care Directive
  • Contents of House
  • People to Contact
  • Property & Real Estate Inventory
  • Safes & Storage Locator
  • Vehicles & Vessels
  • Checklist to follow after a death in the family

This new edition also includes the following additional forms:

  • Create an enduring power of attorney
  • Register a death
  • Plan a funeral
  • Inform survivors of insurance policies, bank accounts, tax records and more!

The kit includes instructions, individual summary guides to completing each form, and instructions on how to prepare a codicil to your will.

a little disappointingReview by Dwight
It's a good starter but does not have Power of Attouney forms for either medical or financial. I think it is a good guide to list all contents you own and to organized everything so that you can write a good will but the forms seem incomplete to me (Posted on 5/16/2013)
For the average Canadian this a good buy.Review by Stephen
If you want a good set up a good will, I would suggest buying a better will kit. (Posted on 12/21/2011)
Too BasicReview by Disappointed User
There is only one basic form to use for your will and it doesn't even have any examples about how to state your wishes for a trust account to be set up for your children. It will work if all you need to do is leave everything to a spouse or charity, but anything more complex and it falls short.

[Publisher's reply: You are correct that this kit does not deal with trust accounts. Trusts are complex matters which a consumer would be ill-advised to try setting up without seeking the advice of a lawyer who is a specialist in the field. Our books and kits are directed at the average Canadian who wants her assets distributed to a spouse, children, family, and/or charity and whose estate is not large or complex enough to warrant the time and cost of creating legal shelters for it] (Posted on 8/26/2009)
